This is my third season with Workaway in Florida. I have worked with The Polo Club of Boca Raton for all three seasons.
My experience so far has been extremely rewarding both professionally and personally. I work as a pastry chef in the club and have worked very hard during my time here but have also enjoyed the experience along the way. I have learnt a great deal of new things since coming to The Polo Club, I have a lot more confidence in my work and in myself. I have made so many great friends from all over the world throughout my three years abroad.
Seasonal work also gives you opportunity to travel between seasons. I have been lucky enough to experience places such as The Bahamas, Mexico, Myrtle Beach, Miami, Washington, New York, Boston and an upcoming trip to New Orleans for The Jazz Festival. I will be travelling to Cape Cod for the summer to take on a new pastry position too. The opportunities are here, you just need to make the best of your experience!
Although I had great interest in pastry before I had applied, I only had a few months experience in the industry. I was lucky enough to be chosen for the position and have worked with a great team ever since arriving. I’ve gained a huge amount of experience during my time at the club. Catering for plated functions of up to 500 people, Street Fair for over 3000 people while keeping up with daily duties of five dining venues. Experience you would not find anywhere else. Without great team work, none of this would be possible to achieve! The club also provides outings for it’s employees such as a trip to Universal Studios and also an employee party at the end of season. Both are great events for the workaway staff.
Workaway is definitely a great way to take that first step into the hospitality industry abroad. If it weren’t for Elaine Blood, I’d probably still be working at hotels back home complaining about the weather and day dreaming of a life somewhere else. When I first heard what they had to offer, I thought it was too good to be true. But they make the process very easy, helping you every step of the way. Once you land on American soil, the club then takes over so you don’t feel completely lost abroad! If you have any issues, there’s always someone you can speak to.
I came on this Workaway program alone, along with 14 other Irish in my group. It was probably one of the best (and scariest) decisions I have made and I have never once regretted it. As long as you are willing to put some hard work in while here, there is a great amount you can benefit from it too. Why spend a winter looking at the rain when you could be lying by the pool in 30 degree heat, right?
